Main objectives of the assessment: Demonstration of understanding of principles that govern microstructures, physical and mechanical properties of light alloys for automotive applications through analyzing experimental results on samples produced using various casting processes.

Brief  Description of the assessment: Lectured material consists of application of phase diagrams to tailor the microstructure of alloys, nucleation and growth, fundamentals of solidification, faceted and non-faceted growth, inoculation process, inspection of grain structure of an alloy solidified with and without grain refiner additions, processing methods for wrought & cast alloys, heat-treatments, experimentally determining changes of tensile and hardness for various Al alloys with different heat-treatment conditions, types of cast iron and steels, phase transformation and selection of phases in steels, origin of strength, thermo-mechanical processing, Ni and Ti alloys, corrosion/prevention methods and welding/Joining processes. The objective of the assessment is to further understand the underlying principles and processing methods that are applied to tailor the microstructures of various materials to achieve wide range of properties. “Required data analysis” is designed in such a way that the fundamentals discussed during

(K)  LO3: Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding on how the microstructure influences mechanical and physical properties.

(K)  LO4: Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles of manufacturing process relevant to high performance vehicles.

(C)  LO5: Be able to undertake an in-depth analysis of various joining techniques for hybrid automotive structures.

(C)  LO6: Demonstrate an advanced understanding of material selection and property requirement for different automotive components.

(S)  LO7: Hands on experience with the analysis of microstructure versus properties of materials.
